Hmm, I'll grant that this article's distillation of Danzig's strategy makes for good, eye catching, journalism, but not much else.
I mean, really, is this not a great metaphor? "Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump on the back of his head behind Christopher Robin. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming down stairs. But sometimes he thinks there really is another way if only he could stop bumping a minute and think about it.”
The author's paraphrasing of this into "if it is causing you too much pain, try something else" is piss poor, but certainly makes it easier to dismiss Danzig's talk as pat zen bulshit.
If anything, it makes me curious to see a more serious take on this guy's take on security strategy...
He’s advocating a return to dealing with terrorism as a legal matter as we did in the 90’s because dealing with this as a military issue is hard. (Is the Poo metaphor really that clever?)
Well the issue I take with Danzig directly is that he seems to completely disregard the cultural and political factors that make Islamo-fascism different than Aum Shinrikyo or ...good god...soccer hooligans. They don’t have Madrasah’s in Japan or the UK or…um…state support.
State support. That’s the rub. Nothing he has said allows for the reality that children in these “terrorist” states are indoctrinated from the day their born and are not that culturally alienated. They are not merely Star Wars fans suffering from ennui.
So yes I think the articles portrayal of him being naive has at least some basis.
